Two things your web site needs to do to pay its way

If your web site is not generating a return on the money it's costing you, Craig Dewe says there are two simple ways to remedy the situation

Most business owners view their website as a bottomless pit that just likes to eat their money... and that’s usually a pretty accurate description of most business websites. Craig Dewe shares two ways to help your website make more money.

The simple truth is most websites fail to make money. Many business owners invest thousands of dollars on a website that ends up just sitting there. No one emails, no one calls... and most importantly no one gives you any money.

So how do we fix that? We read about the two big mistakes that most websites make of course.

Missing a conversion process
Many website owners

worry so much about traffic they forget the other important part of the formula. Your website needs to have a clearly defined website conversion process to convert visitors into buyers. Most website owners fail to spend any time designing this process.

Believe it or not the secret to making money online hardly ever involves people showing up and throwing money at you. You're unlikely to find a business where you don't have to sell your products and services to the visitor. Don't like selling? Bite the bullet and do it.

What's great about the web (while also limiting us) is no face-to-face selling. This allows us to put our fears of rejection behind us, bite the bullet and sell stuff. If you don't get any sales you can always blame your website and save hurting your own feelings.

Having a clear process is the key to improving your web conversion.

No web marketing strategy

This brings us to a bigger problem with most websites... no strategy. Website conversion is one part of the strategy that's lacking and the second is generating traffic. Even if your website can sell the pants off all your competitors it doesn't do anything without visitors.

You obviously need strategies to attract visitors to your website. These might include search engine optimization, pay-per-click advertising, article marketing, video marketing and social media. But you need to focus your efforts with a strategy.

Another mistake (and yes I've made it) is to run after multiple strategies and constantly changing direction. And this means no strategies you try get any traffic and you give up due to poor results. The secret is to select just a few web marketing strategies that you can apply over the next few months and simply do them consistently.

When you start to see great results with these strategies then by all means add more. But don't throw away what got you that far. The winners in this game are the ones that do the basics very well.
