Many website owners look to get their site to top of Google for more leads and the business that will come from it.

Many times knowing how to look at the competition, who are already at the top, will give clues that you can apply.

Here are some quick tips on how to do this.

1. Search the subject you want to be found under
2. Go to your competitors website which appears in the top 3 results
3. Look at the very top left of Internet Explorer and you will see some text in the grey bar

This is the Title or

"Title Tag" of the page. Every web page on a site should have its own custom Title Tag as this tells Google, what that specific page is about.

Here is a good example of a Title, for a site aiming to found for the subject "Dog clothes":

" Dog clothes and dogs clothing: Designer apparel, dogs tshirts, coats and discount dog sweaters for thedogclotheshop.com "

Points to note from the example:

  • Main Keyword is first word, followed by variations of similar words. Its natural while also brings in the other similar items the online shop sells.
  • Just like a title of book, it tells the main information of the site, it doesn't try to tell the whole story.

To have a closer look at any site you can view the information by

  • Using Internet Explorer from the top menu >> view >> source
  • And looking for: <TITLE> ……..Some words here.. </TITLE>

This allows you to see what is behind the web site. The title is not displayed on the page your visitors see, but will appear in the blue link in the search results pages of Google

Another major factor in how a website gets to the top is the amount of links to a page.

To view how Google sees the links to your competitors site you can use this as a search in Google:

link:http://www.YourCompetitorsSite.com

This is only a guide as it is very often out of date and is only updated every few months.

For any site looking for more free traffic from Google, a linking strategy should be included that helps to create more incoming links.

This is very brief outline of some of the 200 plus factors that can affect how a site is ranked. With the correct strategy plan and implementation, a top ranked site can bring a flow of leads and new business from your website.
