What do flexible working arrangements mean for your business?

Flexible working arrangements are one of the benefits of operating a business from home. Flexible hours that allow more time for family and other commitments are a factor that has made home businesses an increasingly popular option.

Most home businesses already provide flexible working arrangements for their workers. Often it’s simply a case of like minded people working together because they share the same values — a desire to spend more time with family or balance work with other interests.

From July 1 the Employment Relations (Flexible Working Arrangements) Amendment Act provides yet another option for employers and employees who want to take advantage of flexible working arrangements.

Who’s covered?
Workers who have been employed for six months and have the care of any person have the right to apply for flexible working arrangements.

The Act gives eligible workers the right to ask for flexible working arrangements but also recognises that it is up to the employer to consider in good faith whether the request can be accommodated.

Already providing flexible working arrangements?
If your business already provides flexible working arrangements your employees are is less likely to use the right of request. However it may be a good time to review your policies and see how they are working for you and your staff.
