The past 18 months have been quite a journey. It was becoming increasingly obvious that although the HomebizBuzz web site was popular it was getting harder and more expensive to add all the functionality we wanted to and to make the site more community-centric. The other option was to rebuild the site from the ground up, and move the data across.
When we considered the pros and cons, it was obvious the right decision was obviously the latter. However, it wasn't the easy option.
18 months, and blood, sweat and tears later, I think we've achieved a lot - but not yet everything we want to do. While we all knew in theory what the project would entail, I don't think any of us could have guessed how tricky some of it would be.
Deciding how we wanted the new site to look and function was relatively simple. The biggest and most challenging part of the job was importing over a decade's worth of data, including information for over 25,000 users, and making it do all the right things and crop up in all the right places.
We've tweaked and tested, and tried to catch all the bugs - but it's with bated breath we are inviting you in to have a play with the new site, as there are bound to be the odd gremlins that got through.
Going forward though, we intend to catch them all, and bring you an online community like no other, a place you know you can turn to for information, resources, tools and an active community of self-employed business people willing to network, share and help out. We hope you like the new site and spend many happy hours here finding solutions to business issues, networking with other businesses, and growing your business!

I started HomebizBuzz in 2000, when I worked from home and realised there was nowhere for home businesses to find relevant information, nor a community of like-minded people to tap into for support, or just a chat. Since then the site has grown to be a popular, active destination for self-employed business owners, a place to find information, resources, tools, support and friends. I'm passionate about micro business, as they are often "invisible" and their contribution to the economy is under-rated. I've been involved in research projects, co-written a book chapter, launched The David Awards and lobbied government and others to help give the micro business person a voice. In 2005, I was humbled to receive a Vero Excellence in Business Support for the Individual who had made the biggest contribution to business support in New Zealand. When I'm not driving Bizbuzz, I enjoy gardening, experimenting in the kitchen, entertaining, travel and spending time with my family. |
