Would you allow your young child to swim unattended in the pool? - I doubt it. So, would you invest your hard earned money without knowing what was happening with it? - I hope not!

This however is what I see happening with people and their Superannuation/Kiwisaver/RRSP/401k’s etc. The average punter out there who works hard and is having a portion of their weekly pay cheque being taken (literally taken – the government knows best how to invest your money) and put into a ‘retirement fund’ – I ask you this: “Do you know where that (YOUR) money is being invested and what are the likely returns on that (YOUR) money?”

I would suggest the answers to those questions is likely…, in fact I speak with many people and the answer goes a little something like this, “No and I’m not sure, my financial planner tells me the fund averages 10-12% return over the life term.” Now being in this situation doesn’t mean it is wrong or that you are a bad person or that you are going to hell. It simply is a way of doing things that has YOUR financial circumstances in someone else’s hands.

This in my opinion is a huge financial fopar where you and YOUR money are at the mercy of the markets…effectively the ‘Gods.’ Take a trip down memory lane and it’s not a long trip either. The ‘Global Financial Crisis’ as it was dubbed, wiped off millions and millions of dollars from Superannuation Funds worldwide affecting the average person’s ‘retirement fund.’ In a lot of cases people had to either go back to work or keep working to be able to afford to live. Others saw tens of thousands of dollars evaporate before their very eyes and because of their lack of financial education could do nothing about it.
