Beware. We all love the thought of a bargain, but a bargain is not a good buy if it stays in the back of the wardrobe and is only worn once or twice, or worse still, never. The key to successful shopping is having direction.

EmailAlmost all fashion retailers are in sale at the moment. The red-lettered SALE sign beckoning from the shop window is enticing. Sales are wonderful if you use them wisely, but don’t just buy something only because it is on sale. That garment must still fit into your wardrobe plan and look great on you. There’s no point wearing something that compromises your style just because the price is slashed.
Remember the cost per wear rule. The most expensive item in any wardrobe is that which has never been worn or worn only once. It may be a “couldn’t believe it” price of only $35, but it doesn’t need many of those to pay for a sensational wardrobe essential. As soon as you’ve worn that great $200 skirt twice a week for two months it’s down to $12.50 per wear.
When I do wardrobe audits with clients often it is the “bought on sale” items that are the culprits – the impulse buy that was a bargain because of the discount, but not right.
One of the wisest ways to make the most of the sale season is to target shops that you could not usually afford.
Or use the sales to experiment with a new fashion trend, that you’re unsure about. You don’t want to invest too much of your clothing budget on this new trend, but you’re tempted.
We all have favourite staples in our wardrobes – merino tops – black trousers – white shirt – colourful scarves or whatever. Look for those dateless pieces in the sale racks.
SALE may be a four letter word, but think about each letter when buying a “bargain”:-
S = style must suit you
A = accessories are great addition to the wardrobe
L = learn to leave the item on the rack
E = experiment with a new look at a discount
Or be tempted in to the sale boutique and then ignore the discounted rows and head to the “new arrivals.” That is a good way to give you first choice on the new season’s styles and alert you to the next season’s fashion trends, ensuring you’re one step ahead.
Whatever you buy, have a wardrobe plan; know the colours and styles that suit you and enhance you.
