Invest in yourself. Work out which aspects of running your home business you are good at, and which you need to learn more about.
Relationships…… a big word for something which should come naturally to us. Humans were designed to be social, and forming relationships is a very important part of our community.
Then why do a lot of us struggle to form those relationships? Both personal and professional, forming a good relationship is a daunting task. We live in an “instant world”, a place where everything has to happen that very moment: we communicate without seeing each other, and this in itself causes problems. How often have you not received an email that sounds abrupt, only to find out afterwards the person did not mean to be so blunt. Had you met that person face to face their body language or facial expressions would have tipped you off on how that person really feels. Ever made a fool of yourself by reacting to an email that sounded rude? Don’t worry, most of us have at some stage!
In my business I have found the personal touch works, every time. I tend to keep electronic communication to a minimum, preferring a face to face chat over emails wherever possible.
Clients who achieve their targets are given a small reminder of their success in the form of a small gift. It does not need to be expensive but does show you’ve recognized their efforts, you do care. If your business is not results specific you could still reward your clients: think of your most loyal clients, or those who pay on time every time. Show them you appreciate it, and you’ll be amazed at the response you’ll get.
Every new client will be nervous about your business. The most important thing is to put them at ease, show them that you are professional, know your stuff, explain in detail how your business works. Once a person understands your business it will be that much easier to make them your client.
If your business is service orientated than be on time every time. Nothing annoys a client more than having to wait. They might say don’t worry, it’s fine. But the reality is, it is not fine, and your client will soon start shopping around elsewhere.
Newsletters. Not everyone is a writer or expert publisher, but a newsletter does not have to be a piece of art. Just something that looks moderately attractive so people want to read it, and all it has to include are items related to your business: advice, what is happening in your business, any upcoming events your clients may want to know about. I can almost hear you thinking: but that takes time. Yes it does, but any time spent on keeping your client happy is time well spent. That is how relationships are built.
It is easier getting more business out of existing clients then it is finding new clients, so get out there, form those relationships….
