DIY Website Optimization Lessons

Top tips for optimizing your website:

1. Work to make search engines ‘think’ your business is synonymous with certain keywords – such as “Rugby” and “The All Blacks”. i.e. If 10% of ‘Rugby’ searches relate to ‘The All Blacks’, then Google assumes the searcher is looking for ‘The All Blacks’, and will throw up relative websites.

2. To attract visitors who are looking to engage – instead of those just looking for free/cheap info, create negative search keywords such as ‘free’ and ‘budget’ in your Google Adwords campaign. Do a sanity check of the keywords you are currently using, keeping engaging terms and eliminating those that aren’t.

3. Gain rank by using the same keywords as your competitors.

4. Because Google ranks pages – not websites, ensure you optimize five keywords per page for best results.

5. If your business operates from a specific location, include this in your keywords. For example, ‘Plumbers’ vs. ‘Plumbers Auckland’.

6. Just 20% of search engine ranking comes from activity happening on your site – the other 80% is from what others are saying about you, and what you are saying about yourself in blogs, articles and links. Ensure you spread yourself around for best results.
