If you are working with a recruitment company they will write the advertisement for you but if you decide to DIY you will need to brush up on your writing skills. A good way to get ideas on how to write recruitment ads is to look at some for similar roles and use them as a basis to work from.  Here are some places you can advertise that are not just your run of the mill NZ Herald vacancies page.

Company Website - If you have a website this is a great place to list your vacancies. Just make sure to keep it updated and contact anyone that applies through your site. The Warehouse has a great site created specifically for their vacancies and lists everything including current vacancies, training and development, benefits, and how to apply. You might not be as big as these guys but they offer some good ideas on how much information you can add to your site.

Job Sites -Seek and Trade Me are the most common job sites in New Zealand and they both offer one-off advertisements for employers that run for 30 days. There are a number of different options available and it all comes down to your advertising budget. There are some other job sites out there too, but I would recommend you go to the most popular ones that have the highest traffic statistics. Trade Me and SEEK now have very similar traffic through their sites -just to give you an idea of how things have changed over the past 12 months. It is relatively easy to list adverts yourself but you need to make sure you have time to do it. Hint - write your advertisement in Word or Notepad first (and save) as these sites do time out and it can be very frustrating for a first time user if you have to go back in and re-think your entire advert.

Linked In -This is a professional business networking site. If you are on Linked In ask your network contacts if they know of anyone – you would be surprised who knows who.

Facebook –This is another networking site. If your business has a Facebook page, this is an ideal place to advertise your in-house vacancy. Make sure you write clear application instructions as you do not want to be inundated unnecessarily.

Industry specific magazines - This depends on your advertising budget but can be a good way to attract people from a specialised industry. You would need to weigh up the pros and cons as an advert on a job board lasts for 30 days online whereas an advert in a magazine will go to the distribution list once and that will be it. Do some research first - you will need to ensure your advert is well placed and a real eye catcher to make the most of your expense.

Newspaper advertising - Five years ago the NZ Herald was the place to advertise, however people tend to advertise more on online job boards these days. Personally, I think it comes down to people’s lack of time to sit and flick through the paper when they can go online and type in a few simple key words that are relevant to their search. There is also the option of advertising in suburban newspapers - be mindful of your catchment area for the chosen newspaper as you may have a huge amount of applicants but not the quality. It may seem more affordable but when you weigh up your time sifting through all the applicants it might be better to place an advert online.
