Your business will become what it is in your mind. Think about what you want it to be, then work towards achieving that goal. The clearer your vision of the end result, the easier this will be.
Great success begins with implementing a single idea. Whether you've run several businesses or none, it doesn't matter. You can always start somewhere. The key is to learn about how the business world works; how players play and when to take calculated risks. Operating a company teaches you how to survive the tough times (usually presented in the first few years); interact with those who manipulate and instead, select those with integrity.
When beginning your journey you will notice the incredible feeling of freedom. You are not bound by a nine to five job. You can be creative at 2:00a.m.. Consciously or subconsciously you will look for other people like you, who are passionate about what they do. Your energy and theirs will connect. How can you prevent a singer from singing; a dancer from dancing or a writer from writing...? If you have a tiny idea, explore it. This is how great things happen.
After the euphoria wears off, you will need to learn the skill-sets you currently don't have. For some, it might be marketing. For others it might be time management. Ignoring the importance of picking up what you don't know is everything. Learn to love the things you can't stand. The life of your business comes from selling, and if you don't like doing it, you won't go very far. You can kiss your dreams good-bye.
Once you go to the bother of learning how to generate leads, ask for the sale and continuously market your ideas, results will happen. You will notice your efforts pay off. You can then re-assess where you'd like to be in five or 10 years.
Business is not what most people think it is, when they first begin. The things you didn't like about yourself when working nine to five, might creep back at unexpected moments. For example, if you are someone who doesn't like confrontation and your staff member puts you in an uncomfortable position, you better learn how to deal with it. Others may not know how to be diplomatic and feel free to lash out at their associates when things don't go their way. The point is that you can't run from yourself.
Self-development goes hand-in-hand with business success. Integrity is everything. What we avoid today comes back to haunt us tomorrow. The journey of building a business is amazing. If you do it for the right reasons as opposed to for the sole purpose of making money, you'll go far. Your network will become stronger and you will be appreciated for your efforts. People will want to flock to you. Always re-evaluate where you are and where you would like to go. How big do you want your company to be...? Does it really matter...?
